I don't know about you but I'm always looking for some fun on the weekends and the weekends of April 24 and 25 and May 1st and 2nd will be fun. Its time for the 95th running of the Sonoita Horse Races. Gates open at 10:30 and the horses start running at 1:00PM. Admission is $4 for adults and children 12 and under are free. They have food, a covered stadium and both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. They will also be simulcasting the Kentucky Derby and serving traditional mint juleps on May 1st. This is really a fun event in a beautiful setting. (This is where Bob Baffert of Kentucky Derby fame got his start.) When I was a little, horse crazy girl we used to go, take a picnic lunch, park our car right up by the track fence and sit on the hood and watch the races. You can't park by the rail anymore and I suspect they'd rather you didn't bring a picnic but its still alot of fun. I went some years ago with friends, won a little money, saw lots of nice horses and had some good food. These races have been happening for nearly a hundred years and they have always been a family oriented event. There is always a big, friendly crowd, good country food and lots of action. Sonoita is a lovely, forty minute drive south of Vail so go have some fun with or without the kids. You can find more information at www.sonoitafairgrounds.com AJ Earley
